Populism & Libertarianism

Paul, a 10-term congressman from Texas and the 1988 Libertarian Party candidate for president, has a well-deserved reputation as a principled constitutionalist. But his success now has more to do with anti-war populism than radical libertarianism.

If there’s any redeeming irony here, it’s this: This populist surge could end up nudging the GOP in a more libertarian direction after all. If Huckabee knocks out Romney in Iowa, the Republican nomination seems assured for Rudy Giuliani.
Rudy is nobody’s idea of a libertarian (at least on issues such as government surveillance and executive power), but he’s fiscally conservative and socially liberal - the best a libertarian can hope for from today’s GOP.

Não é verdade. O conservadorismo tradicional. o da precaução em assuntos externos e não própriamente anti-war populist está com Ron Paul. Como o ex-agente da CIA da unidade anti-BIn Laden. E ainda os paleos-conservadores. E ainda os que sendo pro-choice vêm uma plataforma de entendimento na regra das questões morais dificeis serem resolvidas a nivel local e não federal. E os constitucionalistas na questão da soberania do Congresso em declarar guerra.
E não esquecer que é é contra a guerra à droga e o proibicionismo (Guliani andou a prender fumadores de erva em NY).
Mas vamos indo e e vamos vendo.
O que parece ter ficado claro, é que existe uma faixa de pessoas activas politicamente que a partir de agora passa a ter existência e que será disputada no futuro, alterando o cenário da discussão política em eleições…para melhor.
